Northumbrian Pantry Chutney’s

by | Jun 21, 2024 | Chutney

Northumbrian Pantry started out with 1 chutney, Tomato and Pepper Chutney. It was the first chutney we made and is a take on one my mother used to make. Now, we have a range of 7 chutneys to choose from, and in this article, we will take a closer look at all of them.

Chutneys have a long history, evolving from their ancient roots in India to becoming a beloved condiment worldwide. Traditionally, they were made by grinding fresh fruits, vegetables, and spices into a coarse or smooth paste, creating a blend of sweet, tangy, and spicy flavours. This culinary tradition was not only about preserving seasonal produce but also about balancing and enhancing the taste of dishes.

At Northumbrian Pantry, our range of chutneys stays true to these timeless principles, drawing inspiration from classic recipes while adding a modern twist. Crafted by hand in small batches, our chutneys are made using the freshest, high-quality ingredients, ensuring each jar is packed with vibrant flavours.

Tomato Pepper Chutney

This was the first chutney Alice, our founder, created. Its blue label represents the colours of the Nunwick Estate, where Northumbrian Pantry is based and where Alice grew up. This chutney is a delicious blend of ripe tomatoes and peppers with Indian spices, making it a versatile addition to any meal; we particularly enjoy it with sausages and fish.

Pear and Ginger Chutney

As with all our chutneys, our Pear and Ginger Chutney is hand-prepared and cooked in very small batches to maintain its fresh and full flavour. This chutney offers a delightful balance of sweetness from the pears and a gentle spice from the ginger. This is the perfect accompaniment for fans of goat’s cheese and blue cheeses.

Spiced Beetroot and Apple Chutney

This chutney was our first Great Taste Award-winning product. Beetroot, a staple ingredient in Northumberland with up to three crops a year, pairs perfectly with apples and spices to create a chutney that is both earthy and sweet and proves a very versatile choice, pairing perfectly with most cheeses as well as being a great sandwich filler or enjoy with cold meats or on a salad.

Beetroot and Orange Chutney

Our Beetroot and Orange Chutney is particularly good when paired with goat’s cheese. The sweetness of the beetroot combined with the zesty orange creates a lighter beetroot option than our Spiced Beetroot and Apple Chutney. It offers a perfect harmony of flavours that complements all our favourite foods.

Spiced Apricot and Orange Chutney

Our brightest and liveliest chutney, the Spiced Apricot and Orange Chutney, pairs particularly well with Wensleydale cheeses and pates. The combination of apricots and oranges, along with some punchy spices, makes this chutney a vibrant addition to any cheese board.

Northumbrian Chutney with Plums and Apples

This chutney, made from an old family recipe, is our biggest-selling chutney. It combines the rich flavours of plums and apples, making it a versatile condiment that pairs well with many delicious foods.

Smokey Tomato and Chilli Chutney

Our Smoky Tomato and Chilli Chutney is undoubtedly our favourite BBQ chutney. The smoky flavour, combined with the sweetness of tomatoes, creates a chutney perfect for the grilling season.

We invite you to explore our range and discover your favourite chutney. Each jar is crafted with love and care, ensuring you get the best quality and flavour in every bite. Stay tuned to our blog for more stories, recipes, and tips on how to enjoy our chutneys to the fullest.
